...of originals and shows

Thu Oct 8, 2015, 11:52 AM
So I've been a very busy boy of late in a way. In August, I had a small show up at a local library that is really friendly to local artists. I had my work up there for the whole month and had 6 original paintings sold during the run and 1 that was sold a week afterwards as a result! Pretty amazed by that and the library was so thrilled with the success that I'm booked for the next 2 years there, August 2016 and 2017. Happy times!

So riding high on that success I decided to enter another art show, this time being held at my Alma mater. It's a group show for the art alumni, not a solo show. I put two paintings up that didn't sell, figuring why not. That show starts I think this month and culminates at the university's Homecoming thing...which I'll be missing so I won't know the responses the paintings get. I'll have my work in one the apparent lesser gallery. There was a juried thing to get into the main gallery of which my work didn't not get in. Kind of deflates the ego a bit. I also don't know/haven't seen the work I was up against. All work will be printed out in some mailing so I'll eventually see the rest of the art in the show. I can't make the artist reception.

While that's going on, the company that I work for has been redecorating and re-configuring the office space and they were looking for artwork from within the company. And since I was promoting my library show at work I decided to mention that I have some artwork that would look great for the office. Long story short, my company is going to be buying my latest "circle" abstract paintings with 2 additional "circle" paintings being commissioned. So my evenings are booked now! I wasn't planning on doing more "circle" abstracts, but plans change and I'm happy about it.

Speaking of originals...I have a lot just sitting around collecting dust. Literally, sitting in a closet not doing anything. Because of this and because I desire to make more paintings...well compelled is more accurate. I can't NOT paint. Anyway, I decided to open up an Etsy shop to sell my originals. The price point is pretty reasonable for original work, though shipping is out of my hands since these things are fairly large to ship. So if you want to own an original painting of mine, I've put up all the ones that are currently available in my shop:

Time to change up the journal

Mon Jun 15, 2015, 8:26 AM
So it's been awhile since I've updated this journal and I've been meaning to do so since I rebranded Cogwurx a while ago; lots going on so I couldn't devote any time to any journals.

So..um...what's new. I have an 8 month old who is now crawling, so that's taken up most of might time, but I'm fortunate enough to be able to squeeze some paintings in. I'm so glad I switched to the water-mixable oils. Takes a lot of the worry out of painting around kids, though still need to be mindful of them.

I have an art show coming up at a local library. Nothing major, but it will allow me to sell my originals and clean out some space from a closet I dubbed "art storage". That also means that I'll be getting my latest batch of paintings (about 19 of them) professionally photographed so I'll be able to offer some new prints! YAY!

My deviantART Story

So this wonderful site turns 14 today. Holy Moses!  I can't believe this site is 14 years old and I've been a part of it as a member for 11 years. Anyway, I'll keep this short as I'm not much of a writer so here's my story on DA in a nut shell.

I've been coming to this site since 2002, drawm to it (Ha HA, no pun intended) by the large Wallpaper gallery and I was really into desktop wallpapers at the time. I found that the more I looked throughout the wallpaper gallery, the more I got inspired and decided to create my own wallpapers and share it with the community. I joined up with DA in June of 2003. Being the introverted artist that I am, I was nervous at first but found a small group of artist's, with a few stand out internet artist friends,  that I still talk with and get inspired by; I'm looking at you gregoriousone and Senecal, among others.

It's funny to look back and my gallery and see the Time line of DA and bask in the flood of memories from the meteoric rise of deviantArt which brought about the Bandwidth Crisis, the drama around Jark, the artist friends the came and went, with a llama or two here and there. I've seen my art work mature along the way too, helped in part by the wonderful, talented, and amazing artists that I've found here and gotten to know and be inspired by.

Happy Birthday, dA!

Happy July and happy days it's summer here. I love this time of year!

A couple things to update everyone on...I've slowed down on the paintings a bit...I'm taking a "forced" hiatus right now. Meaning that, I'm taking a class and focusing on a couple digital projects that need my attention so I don't want to be distracted by paintings. So once I get through those I'll be about to jump right into painting again. However, things will slow down again on that front in late fall as I'm going to be a daddy again. So paintings might be a bit sporadic. I don't know yet....anyway, I thought I'd let you guys know what's going.

Secondly, I've decided that I'm tired of my abusive relationship with Threadless.com and the fickle voting system there. So I set up a t-shirt shop at TeePublic if anyone is interested. I have about 5 designs up there with a few more on the way. Check it out: www.teepublic.com/user/cogwurx

How's everyone's summer so far?

I hope that this end of the year finds all of you happy, healthy, and creative!

It's been a busy year for me and I'm happy to say that it's been quite creative. I feel really energized artistically. I'm in the process of painting 3 paintings, a typography design/trendy quote poster, and a new propaganda poster (still in the thumbnail phase).

I had some downtime recently and started going through my watch list. It was fun and sad at the same time. There are a lot of talented artists on my watch list that no longer participate, for whatever reasons, on DA. I actually started to unwatch a lot of those talented artists since the majority of them haven't posted in years...I'm talking 5+ years of inactivity. It's just interesting to me to see who comes and goes on this site, who stays for the long haul and is still part of this community as one matures artistically. Anyway, I need more coffee if I'm going to keep this deep thinking up.

I recently posted a new design that I was hoping would get on threadless.com and it's been approved for voting:

So go vote for Space Cadet: www.threadless.com/threadless/…

I hope that 2014 will be a great and creative year for you all who happen to be reading this!

I've not been doing much painting lately, opting to spend most of my creative time on redesigning cogwurx.com. I'm almost there, responsive design is a real pain the neck. So for those that got excited that I was painting again, fear not, I'll be back at the easel soon. For now it's code, code, code.

In the meanwhile I also dusted off the graphic design skills a bit and submitted a few t-shirt designs to Threadless. I plan on putting up the images in the gallery at some point soon. Here they are:

Vitamin C : thrdl.es/~/2hkz

Robot Roast: thrdl.es/~/2hea
Oldie but a goodie that i updated for a t-shirt. I may update it again with the new branding I have for Cogwurx, not sure yet.

Hello!?  *sounds of crickets*....is anyone here?

Not sure who all watches my still as I've not been producing much work in the last couple of years though I commented and fav'd a lot. So basically I've been more of a lurker than contributor. This lack of art contribution has been a result of a number things: lack of time, space, creativity, etc. But that is about to change!

I've recently started painting again thanks to the purchase of Water-Miscible Oil Paints. Part of the reason I haven't been painting in the last two years is that the chemicals and such that I use with my oils and where my art space is located in my home was not in the best interest of the health and well being of my baby. So as not to have my newborn (now toddler) breathing all the regular oil paint fumes and getting into the oil paints I put things away for a later date. I tried acrylics but i just don't like consistency of the paints so I was stuck because I loved painting in oils.  Along comes water mixable oils and I'm back to painting again! HAZZAH!

Well I can sing the praises of Water Miscible Oils all day, but I'm sure you don't want to read about that and if you made it this far, Great! I only have a bit more of an update.

On top of painting again, I'm out of my creative funk which I've been in for about 2 years now. I can go into details as the environmental issues that brought about the creative block, but it would only bore you and I don't want to type all that out because I'm lazy like that. I'm in the middle of 3 paintings right now with 3 more being prepped. I'm not sure when I'll post the 2 paintings that I completed this last month since I'm not 100% happy with the photos I took. I may post them anyway. What I normally do is wait till I have a batch of paintings and get one of my photographer friends to take some hi-res photos of my work, but it won't happen until I have a few more pieces anyway and I can't wait to show them off.

In between paintings I started to do some design work again. Mostly with my robots and I'm sort or rebranding cogwurx a bit. Sort of. I'm still working on that. More to come on that front.

Thank you for those that are still watching and that have made it this far in my rambling post.

So this last artistic year didn't go as well as planned. I had hoped to be able to create more art digitally, but that didn't happen. My only excuse is that I spent the better part of the year job searching in my free time that there was nothing left for art. However, once I found a new opportunity and got settled in I was able to start creating again. I started by doing a whole branding scheme for my oft forgotten website Romesplace.com and a new design was born. I'm pretty please with the result. Go check it out in all it's responsive goodness! I'll whole be posting those designs and logos in the next few days or so.

Next up is going to be a redesign of cogwurx.com. I really like this design, but with it's use of Flash that was pretty neat 2 years ago it's now woefully outdated and limited. I'm going to be taking some time on the rework of the site which may involve some tweaking to my CMS in the process. Not sure yet, we'll see.

Traditionally, I'm pretty limited in what I can actually do. My studio is too accessible to my toddler and I'm not comfortable with having all my oils out for her to get into. However, the thought of moving to Water mixable oil paints is rather appealing and requires a bit more chewing on to see how I can do traditional work while keeping my curious child from getting too close.

If you've made it this far, thanks for ready and would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year!

You know, it's interesting to see and here how one's art work inspires once it's been released in the wild. I often wonder how my work touches the individual viewer, whether it be a "Oh, this is nice" or "This piece really moves me". More often than not, I'll never know but I like to imagine sometimes. On those rare occasions that I do find out I'm always amazed at how my art spoke to someone. This occasion happened within the last few days. I got contacted by Sunitalap about a reclaimed guitar project that he just completed that was inspired by "Navajo". Below is his work next to my painting.

Navajo Moon by Sunitalap   Navajo by cogwurx

Speaking of paintings...well, things have been a bit slow on that after "Vivaldi" was completed. I have 2 sketches in the works for another digital painting and one for a vector illustration. This last month has been a hard month with a sick toddler and weekends taken up with family obligations so there hasn't been much time for anything else. I promise, though, more art is on the way!!

Score the amazing Threadless design, Robots! I was promised Robots!, to help it get printed!: bit.ly/xq1kGl

Well, I didn't win the Retro Contest here at dA last month. Which is kind of a bummer as I felt that the chosen designs were less than spectacular. So I decided to have my Robots, I was Promised Robots fav.me/d4nkla0 design submitted to Threadless to see if it can get printed there. So go there and vote for me! bit.ly/xq1kGl

I've not browsed dA in a long time and I feel that I've missed out on some great art, so I recently I've joined some great new groups in the traditional realm of art. It's great to see such wonderful talent and art and I find myself on dA more often than not. I really dig all the variety of work that I see.

I just finished a web site for a local company which I hope to post screen grabs here soon. This has been keeping me from completing my first digital abstract painting, well that and the creative block. I love just letting the art evolve and this digital painting has really evolved. I hope to get it done soon to post.

Okay, so it's been a really long time since I've posted anything. The art front has been non-existent this year. I've had neither time nor the energy to actually do anything creative. Nothing prepares you for having a child. All the cliche's are true your life is no longer your own. All my creativity has been diverted to teaching my daughter how to eat, drink, sleep, play, talk, crawl, walk, smile, etc.

So aside from excuses, why the journal post? Well, I wanted to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

Also, I'm making this resolution, be more creative and post new art work. Yup! Now that my Olivia is 1 and her napping and sleeping are predictable and routine I can now divert some creativity to art work! YAY! I'm going to be working more in the digital realm for a bit. I'll still do "traditional" style "paintings" but it will involve Painter and Photoshop instead of oils and brush. I'm not comfortable doing any oil painting around my one year old since I don't have a real painting studio to paint in. The fumes and the oils are not a good thing to have around her. So I've packed up my supplies for another day. I'll probably do some oils in the summer where I can painting in my garage, but that is still a ways a way to think about. Right now I need to get back into the swing of things with art. I feel rusty.

It's been a great year though. Even with not creating any personal pieces. My work/life balance is really balanced with my job this year. My previous employment really demanded every minute of my life and that was really starting to get to me and my wife. I'm glad that my current situation allows for more family time.

Well, I think I've rambled long enough and if you've made it this far, thank you for taking the time to read this!

Again, have a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

the 4 month update

So a lot has happened at cogwurx since my last journal. I don't even know where to begin so lets start from where we left off...

December brought many a change in my life. My first child was born, healthy and beautiful. She already has me wrapped around her little finger. I had saved all my vacation days and with the holidays had about 2 and half weeks with my daughter and wife. I returned to work for about 3 days and was then given my notice that position was eliminated. I explained how thankful I was that they decided to send me to unemployment with a 3 week old and a wife recovering from delivery. Not that I didn't see it coming anyway, but I had hoped to last a bit longer at that job. I was already looking and had been preparing for a while. Needless to say, it only took me a month to land another job; one that I'm far more happier at. Despite those circumstances, it truly was a blessing to be off for 6 weeks with my new born and my wife. Good times. On from the personal to the more artistic.

During my time off and in between feedings and diaper changes, I managed to finish my last few paintings I was working on last year. I finished a mixed media piece (that I have yet to post) and found a new and interesting direction to pursue. I've not posted that painting due to questions on how to display said painting. It's a unique piece and whose details I feel should be ambiguous at this point....just because I want to keep people interested and guessing. Hopefully, I'll have this mystery painting up in a few days or so...I'm hoping.

Time for me is at a premium. People weren't kidding when they said that kids take up a lot of time. Not sure when I'll get a chance to do another oil painting, if I do it'll have to be quick and small. However, I'm not to keen on doing any oil paintings around a new born soon to be crawler. My studio isn't in an ideal place so I may start doing acrylics. We'll see. So I may start doing digital paintings, I have a tablet and Photoshop so I can start messing around with that or some other digital work. I'm getting the itch again to do more robot work. Lots in the sketch phase but nothing taken into the Adobe suite.

So what can we get from this stream of rambling? I'm still around dA, my painting work will be few and far between, and I'll try to post some digital or work related art when I can.

Thanks for all the support!

Merry Christmas

2 week old and future Tom and Jerry fan, Olivia wishes you all, "eh eeeh nnnnn gaahh pppfffttt"

Things are going to be a bit slow on cogwurx for a bit as all my free time is devoted to the above. I still have 2 paintings that I want to finish, unfortunately they are taking longer to dry that I had anticipated. Mental note, Zinc White takes forever to dry in the winter time. I'm so close to being done it's frustrating to wait for the paint to dry. I don't want to ruin the great textures I've got going and I don't want to rush to completion..so I wait...impatiently. In the meantime, my little girl distracts me; which I don't mind at all.

Well, the last journal was in August so I figured I'd update on what's going on at cogwurx industries:

I've been doing a lot of web design recently. I'm working on a new layout for cogwurx.com. Well, new is too strong a word to use, it's more of refresh. I'm keeping the basic layout and brand, but moving the furniture around and adding a couple of accessories. Man, I've been watching too much HGTV. Anyway.

I'm still working on my big painting. I have put up painting progress pictures here if you interested: www.facebook.com/cogwurx It's slow going and I really don't have a good place to paint right now...more on that later.

In the midst of I decided to start another painting! Madness, I say. It's actually a smaller piece...well, smaller to the current painting. It's more like the usual size paintings that do. There is also another painting in the works as well...it's in the waiting stage. I need to finish one of the two paintings before I can start on the 3rd. Depending on when I'm done with the other paintings will determine if I paint in oil or acrylic.

As mentioned, I really don't have good places to paint right now.I can't do much oil painting in my studio because of the all the fun chemicals that I use. It really isn't good for a pregnant wife to be around all my oil painting supplies. :-] Yup, this year, my wife and I decided to collaborate on a masterpiece and She will be arriving in December.

So been pretty busy of late with lots of weddings and family stuff this summer. I've also been working on one of my personal sites (www.romesplace.com), which I launched today.

I am working on that big painting that I've mentioned in my previous journals. I've been photographing the progress. I did the majority of under painting last weekend and I hope to continue working on it this weekend. I hope to post some of the photos in my scraps, I think when I'm further along in the painting. I'll also post my color sketch to see what the final painting will look like.

Man! Has the last 6 months been killer. Work has been really kicking my rear. We had an insane work schedule this past year, nothing like I've ever done...well not in a really long time. I'm glad that it's slowed down.

So I'm finally out of my rut. I've finished a painting! YES! I'm so happy with it. I have 2 other in the works. One is in the color sketch phase. I have the composition set, but I need to find out the right colors. I know a burgundy red is going to be involved. My wife and I just finished painted our living room a stunning red color and I'm going to create an oil painting to put in it. This painting is going to be fun. I'm reclaiming an old canvas and that canvas is 2 1/2 feet by 5 feet. I am really looking forward to painting that big again.

The other painting is going to be smaller, about the size of the one I just finished. The composition is set, and I do have the colors that I want. However, I still need to do a color sketch and make sure the colors I have in my head look good in real life.

If you are wondering about my color sketches and what I do for them, I do them in PhotoShop. It's quick and easy and no mess :-]

Hopefully, I can start work on these next pieces soon!

Well, it's been several months since last I posted something. For those of you that are wondering, yes, I still have my artist block but I'm slowly emerging from it. It's difficult. I've been really busy being creative a work and hammered under a lot of quick turnarounds and long hours that by the end of the day I don't want to do anything more creative. I'm spent.

However, these last couple of days I been trying to focus my creativity back to more personal work. I've been sketch out a new painting for the last couple of weeks and I've been doing a bit of research for it as well so that's got the creative juices flowing again. My next painting is going to be a bit ambitious and will likely take me awhile to do it. Part of the reason is that my next painting will be 5 feet by 3 feet. I've not painted anything that large since I was in university 10 years ago.

I finally posted something new today in the gallery. Nothing spectacular, just something I did last night. It started out as another sketch for my next painting, but it just went a direction that I didn't foresee. It felt really good to just let loose and let the art breathe. I've been so rigged with the creativity lately, trying to stay within brand specifications at work, that it's been affecting my personal work. Man! It is so important to just sketch and let the art do it's thing.

Okay, so I've been a bit quiet on the journal front and frankly been dead silent on the art front. *sigh* I've really haven't don't much painting this year. I think I did only 2 or 3. I think I may have mentioned my artist block in my previous journal, and as of this journal I'm still on (or under) the block. Right now, I have a bit of direction, but zero inspiration, motivation, or passion. Which is a deadly combination to have as an artist. I wouldn't say I'm at an artistic low point. I'm just searching, I guess. Ironically, it's only my oil painting that is suffering. My graphic design and web design is not hurt by this art block. Which is a good thing considering that puts a roof over my family's head. :-] Unfortunately that means that I'm not sure when a new oil painting will be up in my gallery. :-[

After being a DA subscriber for 4-5 years I didn't renew; so now I'm back to being a free user for kicks and grins. I think I'm going to give being a free user here a whirl for a bit just cause. Though, I'm still a beta tester...not sure how that works.

Enough of this pity party, I'm looking for inspiration! Those that have made it and actually read this article, who are your favorite artists and why? They can be DA artists, but not exclusively and I would like to know why you like them. What is it about their work that speaks to you?

Well, my June art show at the local public library has ended. I have to say that I'm truly shocked and amazed by it's success. Of the 11 paintings that I put up, I sold 5 paintings at the library and one painting that I didn't even have a chance to put up in the show. I'm amazed and encouraged.

If you are curious as to which originals sold the list is thus:

So that now leaves me with I more room at the house for new paintings, YAY! Speaking of new paintings...things have kind of stagnated. I've hit creative blocks. I can get really far into a painting and some really cool colors and textures but then things peter off and I can't go any further with the painting. So I'm stuck with unfinished, directionless work. *sigh* I guess it's a good thing though. I'm sitting back and rethinking how I do my paintings and the direction that I believe that my work should be going. Hopefully, I can have something new up this month, I really don't want to sulk in this creative block for too long.
